The serpent was clever, more clever than any wild animal God had made. He spoke to the Woman: “Do I understand that God told you not to eat from any tree in the garden?”
The Woman said to the serpent, “Not at all. We can eat from the trees in the garden. It’s only about the tree in the middle of the garden that God said, ‘Don’t eat from it; don’t even touch it or you’ll die.’”
The serpent told the Woman, “You won’t die. God knows that the moment you eat from that tree, you’ll see what’s really going on. You’ll be just like God, knowing everything, ranging all the way from good to evil.” GENESIS 3:1-5, MSG
Could you be deceived by someone if you knew they were trying to deceive you? I’ll answer for you- yes. Everyday, someone- somewhere has aborted a dream, released a hope and cancelled a relationship because we are ignorant of the enemies devices. We know that Satan comes to steal, kill and destroy (John 10:10), but we don’t know how he does it. We seemingly go deaf and dumb, lose all our senses and depth perception when he slithers into our mental and physical space.
You were in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone was your covering, sardius, topaz, and diamond, beryl, onyx, and jasper, sapphire, emerald, and carbuncle; and crafted in gold were your settings and your engravings. On the day that you were created they were prepared. Ezekiel 28:13 ESV
Our discernment has become dull and rusty. Its as if we don’t recognize the enemy our of soul unless he has red horns and hoofed feet. Well, let me remind- before his abrupt eviction from heaven, Satan is described as the most anointed of cherubs; beautiful, covered in every precious stone. What does that mean? He knows how to clean up well!
Stop looking for horns and hoofs!
Yes, the enemy uses the obvious to assault you- to break you- to kill you… like mass murder, pedophilia, etc. But he also uses more subtle and stealth-like devices, like unforgiveness, offense, division, distractions, and even questions (doubt) to derail us.
DID YOU KNOW that the very first question in the bible was posed by Satan?
In Genesis 3:1, the serpent (Satan) questions the Word that the Lord gave Eve, causing her to question if what she was told was indeed true.
Imagine that. Created in a perfect world. Given a perfect body. Endowed with all power, authority and dominion by the One who created you. And yet a slithering creature, with whom you named (Genesis 2:20), is able to deceive you into believing that the One who gave you everything is somehow holding out on you! Well, we know how that ended- Adam and Eve were kicked out of the Garden and we (you and me) now live in a fallen world.
Guess what? Not much has changed. God the Father has given us everything, with all power, authority and dominion. But we’ve allowed ourselves to be deceived. We’ve given an ear to Satan’s questions and have sadly, questioned the Father’s intent and plans for each of us.
To keep Satan from getting the advantage over us; for we are not ignorant of his wiles and intentions. 2 Corinthians 2: AMP
Ignorance is not bliss. It’s destiny-altering.
Satan was unable to tempt Jesus (Matthew 4: 1-11) because Jesus knows His enemy. He was there when Satan fell from heaven like lightning (Luke 10:18). Jesus knows his character, his tactics and intentions. He also knows His Father and the Word. And when you know your Daddy- I mean know Him- no demon in hell can tell you anything about Him.
do you know your Heavenly Father?
So, how was Jesus able to resist? Knowledge of Satan’s tactics and intent, yes. But also with the Word. Jesus spoke the Word to Satan. You and I can do the same. You and I have to do the same.
But today is a new day. Hands Up! Today, we are knowledgeable and aware of at least one of the enemies devices. Today, we are going to act like the Word of God is true. That’s a great starting point. Just act like everything God said to you is not only true but available to you. Cancel out any and every question that the slick voice of the enemy whispers in your ear.
The next time the snake in your life ask…
